Chapter 1: Q. 29 (page 7)
What are the major differences between spongy bone and compact bone?
Short Answer
- Osteons, a compact bone tissue structure, make up the strong outer layer of all bones. Areas of bone where stresses are applied in only a few directions are characterized by dense bone tissue.
- All bones have an inner layer of trabeculae-containing, flexible bone tissue. Bones with spongy bone are more noticeable where there is less stress or where stresses come from multiple directions.
