How does RNA differ from DNA?

At the heart of every living cell lies the crucial role of nucleic acids, DNA and RNA, which are the molecules responsible for storing and conveying genetic information. Composed of units called nucleotides, both DNA and RNA provide the instructions necessary for life.

Each nucleotide consists of three vital parts: a phosphate group, a sugar molecule, and a nitrogenous base. The sugar in DNA is deoxyribose, which lacks an oxygen atom at the 2' position, whereas RNA contains ribose, which includes the oxygen atom. This subtle difference is pivotal as it impacts the physical properties of each molecule. Moreover, DNA uses thymine as one of its four nitrogenous bases, while RNA uses uracil in its place.

Structurally, DNA's double-helix model allows it to be stable over long periods, making it suitable for the storage of genetic information. The process starts with DNA being transcribed into mRNA in the nucleus. This mRNA then travels to the ribosome, where it serves as a template for protein synthesis during translation.

Each type of RNA plays a critical role here. The mRNA carries the genetic code from DNA in a form that can be decoded during protein synthesis, rRNA forms the core of ribosomes and catalyzes the assembly of amino acids into protein chains, and tRNA brings the appropriate amino acids to the ribosome in accordance with the sequence of the mRNA. This process is essential for the day-to-day workings of cells and the overall health of the organism.
