Steps in sucrose synthesis

UDP-glucose and fructose 6-phosphate, are the building ingredients of sucrose metabolism which occur in two phases.

Sucrose 6-phosphate synthase catalyzes the reversible transfer of the sugar moiety of UDP-glucose to fructose 6-phosphate to generate sucrose 6-phosphate in the first step.

In irreversible hydrolysis catalyzed by sucrose-phosphate phosphatase, sucrose 6-phosphate is dephosphorylated to sucrose.
