The cytoskeleton is a complex network of protein fibers in the cytoplasm, composed of microfilaments, intermediate filaments, and microtubules. Intermediate filaments provide mechanical strength to cells and maintain their shape, as well as the positions of organelles within the cell. Microtubules support the overall structure of the cell, maintain cell shape, and act as tracks for organelle movement and chromosome segregation during cell division. Overall, the cytoskeleton plays a crucial role in maintaining cellular structure, providing mechanical support, facilitating cell movement, and organizing the internal components of the cell.
