The four main types of membranes in the body are mucous membranes, serous membranes, synovial membranes, and cutaneous membranes. Mucous membranes are located in body cavities that open to the exterior, such as the nose and mouth, and function to protect the body from foreign substances and keep tissues moist. Serous membranes line body cavities that do not open to the exterior, like the thoracic cavity, and function to secrete lubricating fluid to minimize friction between organs and cavity walls. Synovial membranes are found in synovial joints, such as the knee and elbow, and function to produce lubricating fluid that reduces friction within the joints. Cutaneous membranes, or skin, cover the body's surface and function in protection, temperature regulation, and sensation.
