Why is it that reducing the number of moves, delays, and storage in a manufacturing process is a good thing? Can they be completely eliminated?

The reduction in the number of moves, delays, and storagein the process increases the flow, which reduces the amount of time requiredfor each process, which produces anincrease in production. While unavoidable to some extent, all three ofthese add time to the process and no value to the product. These will reducethe time it takes to manufacture a product and improve the process flow.

The elimination of moves, delays, and storage from a manufacturing process can never be fully achieved since they constitute the production process. There must always be a beginning, a middle, and an end.

The most efficient way to manufacture a product is tounderstand where there are movements, delays, and storage and to reduce them tothe best they can be. For some processes, a delay may have to be included justbecause the process requires it. An example could be when painting something.

The part could be made, prepped, and sprayed, but there will still be delayswhile drying because one cannot speed up the process. But big dryers can makethis process less time-consuming, so the delay is minimized
