An ERP software system can be developed from many suppliers and software components or acquired from a single vendor. A multivendor strategy can enable you to buy the "best in class" of each module. However, this frequently comes at the trade-off of higher costs and resources required to create and integrate the functional modules.
A single-vendor strategy, however, maybe simpler to install, but the features and functionality may not be the best available. ERP systems provide integrated planning across a company's functional areas. ERP also enables integrated performance across functional areas, which is perhaps more significant. Today, the focus is shifting to cross-company planning and execution. ERP systems are used to help with this activity.
