In contrast, carbon dioxide has a triatomic structure, where one carbon atom is bonded to two oxygen atoms. The carbon is centrally located with a double bond connecting it to each oxygen. Despite having more atoms, the CO₂ molecule retains a linear structure due to the equal and opposite pulls exerted by the oxygen atoms, highlighting the alluring simplicity and symmetry of its chemical structure.
