The first ionization energy is particularly important because it indicates how easily an atom can form positive ions (cations).

Ions play a significant role in the chemical reactivity of elements. A high ionization energy means the element is less likely to lose an electron and form a cation, which is commonly reflected in the nonmetallic elements found on the right side of the periodic table.

Atomic size and the shielding effect are closely linked phenomena that have a direct impact on an element's ionization energy. Atomic size refers to the distance from an atom's nucleus to its valence electrons. Generally, as we move down a group, atomic size increases because each subsequent element has an additional electron shell.

The shielding effect describes how inner-shell electrons reduce the effective nuclear charge on the outer-shell electrons. As the number of electron shells increases, the inner electrons block the nuclear pull on the outer electrons, making it easier for these electrons to be removed and hence, decreasing the ionization energy.

Alkali metals, which make up Group 1 of the periodic table, exhibit some of the lowest ionization energies due to their large atomic size and single electron in their outermost shell. This makes their valence electron relatively easy to remove. Elements like lithium, sodium, and potassium are typical alkali metals that readily lose their outer electron, resulting in a strong tendency to form cations.

These metals are incredibly reactive, especially with water, and they exhibit similar properties, such as softness and the ability to conduct electricity, which are characteristics informed by their low ionization energy.

Noble gases are located in Group 18 of the periodic table and are renowned for their high first ionization energies. This group includes helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon. Their high ionization energies are due to the full outer electron shells, which make them exceptionally stable and unlikely to react with other elements.

As a result, noble gases are often used in conditions that require non-reactive environments, like in lighting or as inert shielding gases in welding. Their reluctance to partake in chemical reactions is a direct consequence of their high ionization energies.
