What are the different steps of metallurgical processes?

In the enrichment process, the mineral containing the metal (ore) is separated from the unwanted impurities (gangue). This method is mostly used for reactive metals like aluminum, sodium, and magnesium. Common processes include electrolysis and electrorefining.

The final step in the metallurgical process is refining the extracted metal to purify it and remove any remaining impurities. Different methods of refining include: a) Distillation: This method is used for metals that have low boiling points, such as zinc and mercury. The impure metal is heated, converting it into vapor. The vaporized metal then re-condenses into a purified form. b) Liquation: This method is used for metals with low melting points, such as tin and lead. The impure metal is heated on a sloping surface, allowing the molten purified metal to separate from the solid impurities. c) Electrolytic Refining: This method is used to refine metals like copper, silver, and gold. The impure metal is used as the anode, and a thin sheet of pure metal is used as the cathode. When an electric current is passed, the metallic ions from the anode pass through the electrolyte and deposit on the cathode as pure metal, while the impurities fall to the bottom of the cell.
