It's calculated by taking the number of valence electrons of an atom in its free state, subtracting the number of lone electrons around the atom in the structure, and finally subtracting half the number of bonding electrons.

Formal Charge Formula:

Formal Charge = (Valence Electrons) - (Lone Pair Electrons) - (1/2 x Bonding Electrons)

The goal is for atoms in a molecule to have a formal charge as close to zero as possible. However, it's crucial to follow the molecule's electronegativity trends when assigning formal charges—the more electronegative atoms are more likely to have a negative charge.

Covalent bonds are connections between atoms that involve the sharing of pairs of electrons. To grasp the concept within Lewis structures, remember that single lines represent single bonds (sharing one pair of electrons), double lines for double bonds (sharing two pairs), and triple lines for triple bonds (sharing three pairs).

In addition, some atoms can form expanded octets, where elements in period 3 or higher of the periodic table can have more than eight electrons. When assessing the correctness of a Lewis structure, each bond should be associated with two electrons—one from each atom in the bond. The molecular formula is a shorthand representation of the types and numbers of atoms present in a molecule. For instance, a molecule with the formula CH₄ indicates that there is one Carbon atom bonded to four Hydrogen atoms.
