Criticize and correct the following statement: strong-field ligands always give rise to low-spin complexes.

A coordination complex consists of a central atom or ion, which is usually metallic and is called the coordination center, and a surrounding array of bound molecules or ions, which are in turn known as ligands or complexing agents.

When we talk about octahedral complexes, the strong field ligands cause large splitting energy $\left(∆\right)$and they form only low-spin complexes, which have fewer unpaired electrons than in the free ion.

In tetrahedral complexes splitting energy$\left(∆\right)$ is lower than in octahedral complexes with the same ligands, so because $∆$is always lower than ${\mathrm{E}}_{\mathrm{pairing}}$only high-spin complexes can be formed.

When we talk about square planar complexes, only low-spin and diamagnetic complexes can be formed because the four pairs of d-electrons fill the four orbitals with the lowest energy.
