Semiconductors are vital in the fabrication of electronic devices such as diodes, transistors, and solar cells, where precise control over electrical conductivity is required. The band gap size can be engineered by selecting different semiconductor materials or doping them to achieve certain electrical characteristics.

In sharp contrast to insulators and semiconductors, metals have either a very small band gap or no band gap at all. Metallic conduction is defined by the overlap of the valence band and the conduction band, allowing electrons to flow freely even at low energy levels.

The absence of a significant band gap in metals results in high electrical conductivity. This allows for the ease of electron movement throughout the metal when an electric potential is applied. Unlike insulators, which require a large amount of energy to liberate electrons, metals readily allow electrons to migrate due to their closely packed atomic structure and overlapping bands.

This attribute makes metals excellent conductors of electricity and heat. As a result, metals are widely used in industries for wiring, electrical components, and as heat sinks to manage thermal conditions in electronic systems.
