Heat transfer is a mode of energy exchange that occurs due to temperature difference. Imagine placing a metal spoon in a pot of hot soup; soon, the spoon gets hot because the thermal energy from the soup is transferred to the cooler spoon. This can happen in three ways:
- Conduction - where energy is transferred through a material, like when that soup heats up the spoon.
- Convection - when heat is moved by the flow of fluids, as when the breeze moves warmer air around your room.
- Radiation - heat energy that moves through space, as the sun warming your skin.
Each type of heat transfer plays a significant role in how energy is exchanged within and between different systems.
