What is a ceramic? How are ceramics formed from their raw materials?

The term 'inorganic non-metallic solids' refers to a broad category of materials that, unlike metals, do not contain carbon as a principal element and are not primarily made from organic compounds. These solids include a diverse group of materials with unique physical and chemical properties such as hardness, brittleness, and resistance to chemical and thermal degradation.

Examples of such materials include glass, cement, and ceramics. Ceramics, for instance, are renowned for their durability and thermal stability, qualities that originate from their inorganic non-metallic nature. The high heat induces sintering, a process where the particles within the ceramic material begin to fuse together, leading to a reduction in porosity and an increase in the strength of the product.
