What is a polymer? Are all macromolecules polymers?

Effective polymerization requires specific conditions, such as a certain temperature and pressure, a catalyst or initiator, and in some cases, a solvent. Depending on the type of polymerization and the desired properties of the final polymer, these conditions can vary significantly.

Macromolecules are large, complex molecules that have a high molecular weight. Defining characteristics of macromolecules include their large size, complex structure, and the ability to perform a variety of functions based on their composition and sequence.

For instance, lipids can form large structures like micelles and do not repeat a monomeric unit, yet they are still considered macromolecules because of their large structure and complex roles in biological systems.

The term macromolecule is often used interchangeably with polymer, particularly for biological molecules. However, it is important to note that not all macromolecules are polymers, which is a key distinction in understanding their differences and classification.
