The efficiency of the reaction and the compatibility of the materials with the reactions occurring at the electrode surfaces are crucial in choosing the right material.

Furthermore, electrodes are not only passageways but also hosts of critical electrochemical reactions. On their surfaces, the essential processes that lead to the flow of electrons—and thus electricity—are activated. This is where the concepts of anode and cathode come into play, which we will discuss in further detail in the next section.

Every pair of electrodes in an electrochemical cell has names: the anode and the cathode. But what differentiates the two? Simply put, the anode is the electrode where oxidation occurs, meaning electrons are lost. Conversely, the cathode is where reduction happens, which involves the gain of electrons.

During the functioning of a cell, electrons move through the external circuit from the anode to the cathode. This movement is driven by a potential difference between the electrodes. This concept is pivotal, as the direction of electron flow determines the respective anode and cathode in both galvanic (voltaic) cells, which generate electricity, and electrolytic cells, which use electricity to drive chemical reactions.

Here's an easy way to remember: Anode typically begins with 'A' and so does 'Away,' implying that electrons move away from the anode. Whereas with Cathode, you might think of 'C' for 'Come,' suggesting that electrons come to the cathode.

The processes that occur at electrodes, oxidation and reduction, are like two sides of a coin—you can't have one without the other. These reactions together are known as redox reactions. Oxidation is all about the loss of electrons. When a substance loses electrons, we say it's oxidized. This can also be viewed as the increase in oxidation state of the element.

On the other side, reduction refers to the gain of electrons. A substance that gains electrons, reducing its oxidation state, is considered reduced. It's easy to remember this with the mnemonic 'OIL RIG'—Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain.

Considering our context, at the anode, a substance will lose electrons (oxidation), while at the cathode, a different substance will gain those electrons (reduction). This simultaneous process is essential for sustaining a continuous flow of electrons through an electrochemical cell, which is the fundamental mechanism by which batteries power devices, or how electroplating and metal refining are achieved.
