However, beta particles are not powerful enough to traverse through denser materials. A few millimeters of aluminum or plastic can serve as an effective shield. It's important to recognize that while being more penetrating than alpha particles, beta radiation can still be stopped relatively easily compared to the extremely penetrative gamma rays. If protective measures are taken, like wearing appropriate safety gear, the risks posed by beta radiation can be significantly reduced.

These rays are not composed of particles like alpha or beta radiation; instead, they are electromagnetic waves of high frequency—akin to X-rays but even more energetic. The absence of mass and charge enables gamma rays to pass through many types of materials with relative ease. They can even penetrate the human body and thick concrete.

Blocking gamma rays requires dense materials such as lead or thick layers of concrete, which highlights their potential for harm if not properly shielded. Due to their high penetration, gamma rays are widely used in medical treatments and industrial applications, like sterilizing medical equipment and performing non-destructive material inspections. However, due to their energetic nature, they must be used with extreme care, as their potential to ionize atoms and molecules in living cells can cause significant damage and lead to health issues like radiation sickness and increased risk of cancer.
