The concept of charge balance is crucial to understanding the stability of an atom. An atom achieves charge balance when the total positive charge, attributed to protons, equals the total negative charge, contributed by electrons. This precise balance is not coincidental; it's driven by the innate tendency of atoms to reach a state of neutrality, as an uneven number of protons and electrons would result in a charged entity, known as an ion.
