The nuclear fission process is akin to splitting a log of wood into two smaller pieces, but at an atomic level. This reaction is triggered by a neutron striking the heavy nucleus, resulting in additional free neutrons and a tremendous amount of released energy. Its level of radioactivity can range from just above background levels found in nature to extremely radioactive spent nuclear fuel that once powered a reactor.

The disposal and management of radioactive waste are critical issues because it can remain hazardous for thousands of years. Proper containment and storage are essential to safeguard the environment and public health. Unlike fission, the fusion process does not inherently produce long-lived radioactive waste. This stark difference gives fusion an edge as a cleaner alternative in the search for sustainable energy solutions. By drastically minimizing the production of radioactive waste, fusion represents a roadmap towards a less contaminated and more secure energy future.
