Each set of three bases, called a codon, typically specifies a single amino acid, the building block of proteins. This code is universal to nearly all organisms.

During the process of transcription, the DNA code is transcribed into messenger RNA (mRNA), which then travels out of the cell nucleus and into the cytoplasm where translation occurs. In translation, the sequence of bases in the mRNA is read in groups of three bases to assemble amino acids in the right order to produce functional proteins. Proteins are crucial to life, as they carry out a myriad of functions including structural roles, speeding up biochemical reactions, and responding to stimuli in the environment.
