Peptidoglycan, a mesh-like layer, is the primary component of most bacterial cell walls and provides rigidity. Antibiotics like penicillin target enzymes involved in the synthesis of peptidoglycan, thereby weakening the wall and leading to bacterial death.

Due to the unique nature of peptidoglycan (not found in human cells), it represents an excellent target, or 'lock', for antibiotics. By designing 'keys'—antibiotics that precisely fit this lock—scientists have developed powerful ways to disrupt bacterial growth without harming human cells. Understanding the structure and function of the bacterial cell wall is fundamental to developing new antibiotics and fighting bacterial infections.

Penicillin heralded a new age in medical treatment as the first successful antibiotic used to combat bacterial infections. Its potency lies in its ability to interfere specifically with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. When penicillin binds to proteins involved in cell wall synthesis, it prevents the formation of a stable wall, which eventually causes the bacteria to burst due to the internal osmotic pressure.

Its discovery was pivotal, yet natural penicillin has limitations, including susceptibility to stomach acids and the ability of some bacteria to produce penicillinase, an enzyme that deactivates it. This battle against bacterial resistance underscores the need to use antibiotics judiciously and spurs medical science to continuously evolve.
