Chemists sometimes think of molecules with polar covalent bonds as being part covalent and part ionic. How can a bond be both covalent and ionic?

Imagine two friends sharing a pizza equally; that's akin to a covalent bond, where atoms share electrons for mutual benefit. Covalent bonds are the glue that holds molecules together in the vast majority of organic compounds. Each atom brings one or more electrons to the bond, creating a stable balance reminiscent of sharing toys in the sandbox; nobody takes more than their fair share. When atoms within a molecule like hydrogen (H₂) share electrons evenly, the bond forms a strong partnership that's difficult to break.

However, sharing isn't always 50/50. Atoms with stronger attraction, dubbed electronegativity, may hog the shared electrons closer to themselves. This inequality in electron sharing leads us to the concept of bond polarity, which I'll touch on soon. Nonetheless, covalent bonds are about partnership, where atoms connect by sharing electrons to achieve noble gas-like bliss.

On the flip side, ionic bonds are like a classroom trade where one student gives up their snack for another's toy—permanently. An ionic bond occurs when one atom (often a metal) cedes one or more electrons entirely to another atom (typically a non-metal), resulting in a tug of war that one atom clearly wins. Once the electron transfer is complete, opposite charges attract: positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions) link together in a bond powered by electrostatic forces.

Think of table salt (sodium chloride, NaCl), where the sodium donates an electron to chlorine. The resulting ions are held together so strongly by these charges that it takes a lot of energy (like the kind from dissolving in water) to break them apart. Ionic bonds are all about give and take, creating compounds with very distinct structures and properties.

Like a seesaw with kids of different weights, bond polarity is all about the unequal distribution of weight—in this case, electron density—across a bond. When you have two different atoms connected by a bond, they may not share electrons equally because one atom could be more greedy for electrons; that's electronegativity at play.

The more electronegative atom pulls the shared electrons closer, which results in partial charges forming on both atoms. The atom with the higher electronegativity gets a slight negative charge (often represented by δ-), and the other gets a slight positive charge (δ+). This uneven electron sharing creates a polar covalent bond, an unequal partnership where the electrons spend more time with the more electronegative atom. Such bonds are crucial for properties like solubility, boiling points, and reactivity in different substances.

Electronegativity is a bit like social magnetism; it's a measure of how strongly an atom can attract and hold onto electrons when it's in a bond. Atoms aren't created equal; some, like oxygen or fluorine, are electron bullies, pulling shared electrons towards them like a playground tyrant hoards toys. This measure of electron attraction is central to understanding why bonds behave the way they do.

The Pauling scale, devised by chemist Linus Pauling, assigns values to atoms; the higher the value, the stronger the pull. This concept explains why water (H₂O) has polar covalent bonds—oxygen has a higher electronegativity than hydrogen, resulting in a lopsided electron sharing.
