Understanding Rayleigh Scattering

Rayleigh scattering is more effective at shorter wavelengths, such as blue and violet. The reason the sea doesn't look violet, despite violet light being scattered even more, is that our eyes are more sensitive to blue light and the sun emits more light at the blue wavelength. Furthermore, some of the violet light is absorbed by water and doesn't reach our eyes as efficiently. Hence, when looking at the ocean, the majority of scattered light that reaches our eyes is blue, leading to the sea's blue appearance.

The optical properties of water are essential in influencing what we see. Pure water has a slight blue tint, which is more perceptible in large volumes, as seen in the sea. The molecules in water absorb light in the red part of the spectrum, and as a result, blue light is less absorbed and more scattered. This selective absorption and scattering are responsible for the blue color of water bodies.

However, the overall color of a water body can also be affected by suspended materials and the presence of algae or other organic matter. These factors can change the absorption and scattering characteristics of the water, leading to different shades being visible. For example, water in coastal areas may appear greener due to the presence of chlorophyll from marine plants. It's this complex interplay of light and the optical properties of water that create the vast array of colors we observe in aquatic environments.
