The properties of colloids are fascinating and diverse, stemming from the size and nature of the dispersed particles as well as their interaction with the continuous phase. One of the hallmark properties of colloids is the Tyndall effect, which refers to the scattering of light by the colloidal particles, often creating a visible beam of light within the colloid. This effect is what allows us to 'see' the path of a flashlight beam when it passes through a fog.

Another interesting property is the Brownian motion, the random, incessant movement of the dispersed particles within the continuous medium, resulting from collisions with molecules of the dispersing agent. This motion helps prevent the particles from settling. Moreover, colloids can demonstrate a range of viscosities and can behave differently under varying mechanical stresses, which is known as non-Newtonian behavior. These and other properties, such as the ability to adsorb ions and molecules onto the particle surface, give colloids a wide range of applications in industries such as food, medicine, and materials science.
