Electronegativity is a measure of an atom's ability to attract and hold onto electrons. In a chemical bond, different atoms can have varying strengths of attraction for the shared electrons. By comparing these values, we can predict the direction in which the electrons are more likely to be found. This shift is what creates a dipole moment.

A dipole moment results from the separation of positive and negative charges in a molecule. It occurs in polar molecules where there is an uneven distribution of electron density.
Consider a simple hydrogen chloride (H-Cl) bond. Chlorine has an electronegativity of 3.0, which is higher than hydrogen's 2.1. This means chlorine pulls the shared electrons closer to itself, creating a partial negative charge (δ-) on chlorine and a partial positive charge (δ+) on hydrogen. The dipole moment points towards the chlorine (H → Cl).
The magnitude of the dipole moment depends on two factors:

• The difference in electronegativity between the bonded atoms
• The distance between the charges

The dipole moment can be represented as a vector, pointing from the less electronegative atom to the more electronegative atom.

Molecular polarity is determined by the shape of the molecule and the distribution of charge within it. A molecule is polar if its centers of positive and negative charge do not coincide.

• In the molecule H-F, fluorine is significantly more electronegative than hydrogen. This results in a strong dipole with the partial negative charge on fluorine, making the molecule polar.
• In contrast, in a molecule like H₃C-CH₃ (ethane), both carbon atoms have the same electronegativity, and the bond is nonpolar. Here, the electron distribution is symmetrical, and the molecule does not have a dipole moment.

Knowing the polarity of a molecule helps in predicting its physical properties and interactions with other substances.

Chemical bonding involves the sharing or transfer of electrons between atoms. The type of chemical bond formed depends on the difference in electronegativity between the atoms.

• Covalent Bonds: Formed by the sharing of electrons between atoms with similar electronegativity. For example, in H₃C-CH₃, both carbons share electrons equally.
• Polar Covalent Bonds: Formed when electrons are unequally shared between atoms with different electronegativities. For instance, H-Cl has a polar covalent bond, because chlorine pulls more strongly on the shared electrons.
• Ionic Bonds: Formed when the difference in electronegativity is large enough for one atom to completely transfer an electron to another. This results in positive and negative ions. For example, in Li-CH₃, lithium has a much lower electronegativity than carbon.

Understanding the type of bond helps predict the chemical and physical behavior of the molecules.
