Chapter 23: Problem 48
In 1907, Staudinger reported the reaction of diphenylketene (1) and benzylideneaniline (2) to give \(\beta\)-lactam 3 . Although this reaction is formally a \(2+2\) cycloaddition reaction, there is ample experimental evidence to suggest that the reaction is not concerted, but is instead a two-step process involving a dipolar intermediate.
Short Answer
Step by step solution
- Understand the reactants
- Identify the cycloaddition reaction
- Determine the reaction steps
