When the \(\mathrm{Pd}(0)\)-catalyzed reactions covered in this chapter are run with a slight pressure of carbon monoxide, it is often found that a ketone is created as the product. For example, the following Stille coupling conditions with added CO give the product shown. Write a mechanism for how this reaction could occur using the organometallic mechanistic steps introduced in this chapter, along with new steps that would be required in this transformation.

During Pd(0)-catalyzed reactions, oxidative addition is the initial pivotal stage that sets up the entire catalytic process. In this step, a palladium(0) catalyst, which is in a relatively low oxidation state, directly interacts with a compound – typically a molecule with a carbon-halogen bond like an aryl halide. The palladium 'inserts' itself between the carbon and halogen atoms, forming new bonds with both and increasing its oxidation state to palladium(II).

The ability of palladium to execute this move is partly due to its exceptional talent for changing oxidation states, and partly due to the nature of the aryl halide which is designed to undergo this specific reaction. As a result, two ligands (the aryl and halogen groups) become attached to palladium, setting the stage for the next steps in the catalyst's journey. This process is not just a simple association, but rather involves breaking and making of bonds that transition the palladium into an active species ready for further reactions.

Following oxidative addition, transmetalation is the second act in our catalytic drama. This is where the organometallic baton is passed from one metal to another – from stannane (a tin compound) to the palladium(II) species created in the previous step.

What happens in transmetalation? The organotin group, which was originally bound to tin, is transferred to the palladium, replacing the halogen that came from the aryl halide. It's an elegant exchange – tin takes the halogen, leaving the organic group comfortably with palladium. This strategic swap builds a new organopalladium compound, now poised for the introduction of carbon monoxide in the following step.

Carbon monoxide insertion, often referred to as CO insertion, is the tricky third movement where the otherwise innocuous carbon monoxide gas plays its crucial role. Quite literally, CO wedges itself into the existing palladium-carbon bond in the organopalladium compound.

The insertion mechanism is somewhat stealthy; the 'back' of the palladium complex is where CO slips in. Not only does this form a strong bond between the carbon of CO and the organic group, but it also dramatically alters the complex, transforming it into a palladium carboxylate. This new species bears the carbon framework of what will ultimately become a ketone structure – a cornerstone in organic synthesis, signaling the impending final act of the catalytic process.

The finale of our Pd(0)-catalyzed reaction is the reductive elimination. After the CO has been strategically inserted, the organopalladium species is ripe for the release of the desired organic product – here, a ketone.

During reductive elimination, the newly formed bond between the carbon of the aryl group and the oxygen of CO morphs into a full-fledged carbonyl functional group (C=O), characteristic of ketones. This transformation happens as two ligands, bound to the palladium(II), use each other to come together, forming a new molecule and freeing the palladium in the process. The palladium sheds its extra bonds and returns to its Pd(0) state, ready to embark on another catalytic cycle. Success is found in the production of a ketone and the catalyst's reusability, showcasing the elegance and efficiency of Pd(0)-catalyzed reactions.
