In this chapter, we studied the mechanism of the acid-catalyzed hydration of an alkene. The reverse of this reaction is the acid-catalyzed dehydration of an alcohol. Propose a mechanism for the acid-catalyzed dehydration of 2-propanol to propene.

Understanding the mechanism of acid-catalyzed hydration is essential for chemists studying how alkenes are transformed into alcohols. In this process, the alkene acts as a nucleophile, reacting with an acid to add a water molecule across the double bond. The acid, usually sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid, provides the necessary protons (H+) for the reaction.

Initially, the alkene's double bond gets protonated by the acid, leading to the formation of a carbocation—this is a key intermediate that helps to understand the reverse reaction, dehydration, as well. The carbocation then rapidly combines with water, forming an alcohol after the loss of a proton. The sequence is characterized by the addition of water (hydration) across the double bond mediated by an acid.

In the realm of organic reactions, the formation of a carbocation intermediate is a pivotal moment that often dictates the subsequent steps. When an alcohol undergoes acid-catalyzed dehydration, it initially transforms into a carbocation intermediate upon losing a water molecule. Carbocations are positively charged species with a carbon atom lacking a complete octet, making them highly reactive.

To give a clearer picture, when 2-propanol is protonated, it turns into a more stable water molecule which then departs, leaving behind a carbocation. The reaction proceeds in two distinct steps: first, the formation of a carbocation intermediate, and second, the elimination of a proton to generate a double bond.

During the dehydration of an alcohol, once the carbocation is formed, a base from the surrounding solution (often another molecule of the alcohol or solvent) abstracts a proton from a neighboring carbon. This event creates a pi bond between two carbons, culminating in the formation of the alkene. This two-step process is seen as an E1 reaction because the rate-limiting step is the generation of the carbocation intermediate.

The initial step in the dehydration of alcohols, like 2-propanol, is the protonation of the alcohol. Protonation involves the transfer of a proton (H+) from an acid to the oxygen atom of the hydroxyl (OH) group in the alcohol. The lone pair of electrons on the oxygen facilitates the proton attachment, making it more susceptible to act as a leaving group.
