Which of the following ethers can be formed in good yield by condensation of the corresponding alcohols? For those that cannot be formed by condensation, suggest an alternative method that will work.

(a) dibutyl  ether

(b) ethyl  n-propyl  ether

(c) di-sec-butyl  ether

Short Answer

Expert verified

(a)dibutyl  etheris a symmetrical ether and hence good yield can be produced by condensation method.

(b)ethyl  n-propyl  etheris an unsymmetrical ether and hence good yield cannot be produced by condensation method. In such case, Williamson ether synthesis can eb used for good yields.

(c) di-sec-butyl  etheris a symmetrical ether and hence good yield can be produced by condensation method.

Step by step solution

01

Bimolecular condensation

The cheapest method for synthesizing simple symmetrical ethers is the acid catalyzed bimolecular condensation where two molecules of alcohols are joined with the loss of a small molecule like water. The alcohol must have an unhindered primary alkyl group to form an ether and also the temperature of the reaction should not be too high. Bimolecular condensation of alcohols is considered to be a poor synthetic method.

02

Williamson ether synthesis

The most reliable and versatile method for synthesis of ethers is given by Williamson method. In this method,SN2 attack of an alkoxide ion takes place on an unhindered primary alkyl halide or tosylate. The yield is poor if secondary alkyl halide is used. The alkoxide is generally made by adding Na, K  or  NaH to the alcohol.

In 2012, a group led by Professor Masayuki Satake of the University of Tokyo reported the isolation and structure determination of a toxin from a marine algal bloom that decimated the fish population off the New Zealand coast in 1998. Extensive mass spectrometry and NMR experiments ultimately led to the structure shown below, named Brevisulcenal-F. (See Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2012, 134, 4963-4968.) This structure holds the record for the largest number of fused rings, at 17.

a. How many ether groups are present?

b. How many alcohol groups are present? Classify the alcohols as 1o or 2o or 3o.

c. Are there any other oxygen-containing functional groups? Which, if any?

(Another true story) An organic lab student carried out the reaction of methyl magnesium iodide with acetone (CH3COCH3), followed by hydrolysis. During the distillation to isolate the product, she forgot to mark the vials she used to collect the fractions. She turned in a product of formula C4H10Othat boiled at 350C.The IR spectrum showed only a weak O-Hstretch around 3300 cm-1, and the mass spectrum showed a base peak at m/z 59.The NMR spectrum showed a quartet (J = 7Hz) of area 3at δ1.3Propose a structure for this product, explain how it corresponds to the observed spectra, and suggest how the student isolated this compound.

Question. Predict the major products of the following reactions, including stereochemistry where appropriate.

  1. 2,2-dimethyloxirane +(oxygen-labelled water)
  2. 2,2-dimethyloxirane +
  3. (2S,3R)-2-ethyl-2,3-dimethyloxirane +

(2S,3R)-2-ethyl-2,3-dimethyloxirane +

Show the rest of the mechanism for formation of cyclized intermediate in figure 14-6.

Role of squalene in the biosynthesis of steroids. The biosynthesis of steroids starts with epoxidation of squalene to squalene-2,3-epoxide. The opening of this epoxide promotes cyclization of the carbon skeleton under the control of an enzyme. The cyclized intermediate is converted to lanosterol and then to other steroids.

Question. Propose a mechanism for the following reaction.
