The rules for finding the systematic names of alcohols are:

1. The longest continuous chain containing a functional group is known as the parent hydrocarbon.

2.A parent hydrocarbon is numbered in the direction that results in the lowest possible number for the functional group’s suffix.

3.If the parent hydrocarbon has two OH groups, the suffix "diol" is added to the name.

4.If a functional group suffix and a substituent are both present, the functional group’s suffix receives the lowest possible number.

5. If counting a functional group’s suffix in either direction yields the same number, the chain is numbered in the direction that yields the lowest possible number of substituents.

6. If more than one substituent is present, the substituents are given alphabetically.
