• Number the alkyl or halo substituent carbon i.e. it should possess lowest number in the parent chain;
• Assign a number to each substituent;
• Write the name of substituent’s in alphabetical order while naming.

• As the name indicates, the compound is a pentane, which means the longest chain i.e. parent chain is having five carbon atoms.
• Two types of constituents are present i.e. one iodo group and four methyl groups.
• Substituents are arranged in alphabetical order and with lowest possible numbering.
