It is a five-membered cyclic ring containing one double bond. Its chemical formula is C5H8. Its odor is petrol, and it is a colorless compound. It lies in the category of cycloalkene, and it contains an endocyclic (these bonds are present inside the cyclic ring) double bond.

Reagent used for the reaction

The double bond of a cyclic alkene can be oxidized to form vicinal diol with the help of two reagents first isKMnO4 in the cold basic solution, and the other one is osmium tetraoxide in the presence of NMO.

Reaction of cyclopentene

When we treat our reactant (cyclopentene) in the presence of osmium tetraoxide and NMO, the yield of the product will be higher than that of potassium permanganate.
