Problem 1
Distinguish between primary and secondary literature. Based on their titles and any research you can do in your library, determine whether the following journals are primary or secondary sources: (a) Chemical Communications (b) Analyst (c) Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry (d) Chemical Society Reviews (e) Polymer Chemistry (f) Natural Product Updates (g) Dalton Transactions (h) Faraday Discussions (i) Analytical Abstracts (j) Green Chemistry
Problem 2
Consider a controversial issue from both sides. Select a current chemical topic being discussed in the newspapers or other media. Controversial issues such as 'nuclear energy' or 'global warming' would be good examples. Next, write out a statement that you might use for a motion in a debate, such as 'Is nuclear energy the solution to our energy problems?' or 'Is global warming really happening?'Then, write at least five points in support of either side of the argument, which you should organise in tabular form. If you can find more than five points, add these to your table, but for each point that you add to one side, you should add one to the other side.
