Coal is a black or dark brown sedimentary rock primarily composed of carbon along with various other elements like hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen. It is formed from the remains of plants that lived and died millions of years ago. The process of coal formation is called coalification, and it occurs over geological time scales.

The process of coal formation can be divided into four main stages: peat, lignite, bituminous coal, and anthracite. Each stage represents a different level of maturity and degree of coalification. 1. Peat: This is the initial stage where plant remains accumulate in waterlogged environments and don't fully decay due to the lack of oxygen. Over time, this partially decomposed organic matter forms peat. 2. Lignite: As peat becomes buried under layers of sediment, pressure and temperature increase, causing the peat to compact and eventually form lignite, also known as brown coal. It has a slightly higher carbon content than peat. 3. Bituminous coal: With further pressure and temperature increase, lignite is transformed into bituminous coal. Bituminous coal has a higher carbon content and energy output than lignite. 4. Anthracite: The final stage of coal formation is anthracite coal, which is a metamorphic rock.
