However, due to tectonic activities and erosion, the continental crust is dynamic, meaning it doesn't just remain on the surface. It can be subducted back into the mantle or altered by metamorphic processes. This dynamism is a crucial detail when trying to understand why the visible Precambrian crust is such a small percentage of the total crust.

Several geological processes, including erosion, sedimentation, tectonic shifts, and metamorphism, continuously reshape our planet's surface.

Earth's lithosphere is divided into several large and small tectonic plates that float on the semi-fluid asthenosphere beneath them. These plates move, collide, pull apart, or grind past each other, creating a variety of geological features and phenomena.

For instance, where plates diverge, new crust is formed as magma rises and solidifies at mid-ocean ridges. Conversely, where plates converge, one can be driven beneath another in a process called subduction, which can lead to melting and recycling of crustal material. These interactions give rise to mountains, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions, and over time, significantly impact the arrangement and composition of the Earth's crust, including significant alterations of the Precambrian foundations.

The concept of rock recycling is integral to plate tectonics and the rock cycle. It's a natural process whereby the Earth's rocks are formed, transformed, and destroyed only to be recreated again. Precambrian crust, being some of the oldest material on the planet, has been subject to this recycling for billions of years.

For example, certain sections of the Precambrian crust might get drawn into the mantle at subduction zones, melted, and potentially resurface as volcanic material millions of years later. This continuous cycle means that although the Precambrian crust comprises a significant proportion of the total crust, due to ongoing geological recycling, only a small part is visible or identifiable at the current geological time, making its preservation on today's geological maps relatively scarce.
