How can mountain chains form without continental collision?

When it comes to the creation of mountains, one might easily picture the clash of massive continental landmasses. However, mountains can also arise in areas where the earth's crust is undergoing less dramatic but equally powerful transformations at convergent plate boundaries. Here, two of Earth's tectonic plates inch towards one another, engaging in a slow motion but high-stakes encounter.

Now, not all convergent plate boundaries result in the type of head-on continental collisions that have formed ranges like the Himalayas. In fact, mountains can form from the convergence of an oceanic plate with a continental one, or even two oceanic plates nudging together. These interactions offer a fascinating tableau where we can observe mountain formation without direct continent-continent collusion.

The notion of subduction might seem arcane, but it's a fundamental earth process that results in some of the most spectacular geological features on our planet. Imagine one of Earth's plates not just meeting another, but actually diving beneath it. This is subduction in a nutshell—a denser tectonic plate sinks below a less dense one into the molten mantle below. As one might suspect, this doesn't happen without some significant geological consequences.

Subduction is not a quiet affair. It's marked by intense pressure and heat, the likes of which can melt rock, forming magma. This magma doesn't stay put; it's buoyant, ascending through cracks in the crust. Eventually, it reaches the surface or hardens below, contributing to mountain formation. This is how we get majestic volcanic mountain ranges like the Andes—mountains born from the subduction of an oceanic plate beneath a continental plate.

Picture a string of islands, each a peak of a submerged mountain rising from the ocean—a volcanic island arc. This geological feature forms through the subduction process but involves two oceanic plates. When one is forced below the other, magma generation ensues. These molten rock materials ascend towards the ocean's surface, creating a series of volcanoes that can eventually grow large enough to break the surface as islands.

As these volcanic islands continue to grow and experience uplift, they can form significant mountain ranges. The Aleutian Islands of Alaska exemplify such a process. Away from the dramatics at plate boundaries, we have hotspot volcanism. This geologic feature might seem to break the rules as it isn’t reliant on the interactions at tectonic plate margins. Instead, hotspots are found within the interior of a plate. They are characterized by exceptionally hot areas in the Earth's mantle that create molten material, which rises to the crust above.

As a tectonic plate maneuvers over one of these persistent jets of magma—a hotspot—volcanoes can emerge. A prime example of this is the Hawaiian Islands chain, which owes its existence to a longstanding hotspot over which the Pacific Plate is traveling. It's not just an isolated peak that forms, but a series of mountains over geological time scales, each marking a point where the moving plate was once overhead the hotspot. This spreads out the mountains, creating a chain that records millions of years of plate movement and volcanic activity.
