Tallest and Shortest Men The tallest living man at the time of this writing is Sultan Kosen, who has a height of 251 cm. The shortest living man is Chandra Bahadur Dangi, who has a height of 54.6 cm. Heights of men have a mean of 174.12 cm and a standard deviation of 7.10 cm. Which of these two men has the height that is more extreme?

Female Pulse Rates Pulse rates of adult females are listed in Data Set 1 “Body Data” in Appendix B. The lowest pulse rate is 36 beats per minute, the mean of the listed pulse rates is x = 74.0 beats per minute, and their standard deviation is s = 12.5 beats per minute.
a. What is the difference between the pulse rate of 36 beats per minute and the mean pulse rate of the females?
b. How many standard deviations is that [the difference found in part (a)]?
c. Convert the pulse rate of 36 beats per minutes to a z score.
d. If we consider pulse rates that convert to z scores between -2 and 2 to be neither significantly low nor significantly high, is the pulse rate of 36 beats per minute significant?
In Exercises 9 –12, consider a value to be significantly low if its z score is less than or equal to -2 or consider the value to be significantly high if its z score is greater than or equal to 2.
Designing Aircraft Seats In the process of designing aircraft seats, it was found that men have hip breadths with a mean of 36.6 cm and a standard deviation of 2.5 cm (based on anthropometric survey data from Gordon, Clauser, et al.). Identify the hip breadths of men that are significantly low or significantly high.
Geometric Mean The geometric mean is often used in business and economics for finding average rates of change, average rates of growth, or average ratios. To find the geometric mean of n values (all of which are positive), first multiply the values, then find the nth root of the product. For a 6-year period, money deposited in annual certificates of deposit had annual interest rates of 5.154%, 2.730%, 0.488%, 0.319%, 0.313%, and 0.268%. Identify the single percentage growth rate that is the same as the five consecutive growth rates by computing the geometric mean of 1.05154, 1.02730, 1.00488, 1.00319, 1.00313, and 1.00268.
