Classification of data according to the level of measurement

Data are classified as per the measurement levels in the following way:

  • Nominal: Data containing labels or tags come under a nominal level of measurement. For example, clothing articles in a store are recorded as 1 for shirts, 2 for belts, 3 for trousers, and 4 for shoes.
  • Ordinal: In addition to the features of the nominal scale, the ordinal scale has labels that can be arranged in a series/order. For example, college grades range from A to E. Here, they follow an order, but the differences between them cannot be measured.
  • Interval: The interval scale can establish the difference between the values, but values (or observations) cannot be doubled/halved. For example, a series of years is recorded for an event over time. Here, a zero value has no meaning.
  • Ratio: In addition to the interval scale, ratios are also meaningful in the ratio scale. For example, the number of spectators in a stadium.

Identification of the appropriate scale

The rating on a 5-star scale has a well-defined order, but the difference between a 4-star and 5-star movie is not the same as the difference between a 1-star and a 2-star movie. Therefore, the rating of a movie comes under theordinal scale.
