56. Do heavier people burn more energy? Refer to Exercise54.
(a) Use your calculator to make a residual plot. Describe what this graph tells you about how well the line fits the data.
(b) Which point has the largest residual? Explain what the value of that residual means in context.

Short Answer

Expert verified

(a) The data does not appear to have an obvious pattern, the regression line appears to be a decent fit for the data.

(b) The point with the largest residual is (42,1418).

Step by step solution

01

Part (a) Step 1: Concept introduction

A residual plot is a graphic tool for determining the relationship between a transmitted independent variable and the retort variable when multiple independent variables are used.

02

Part (a) Step 2: Explanation

The difference between the actual and expected values called the residual. The horizontal axis contains the mass, and the vertical axis contains the residuals.

03

Part (b) Step 1: Concept introduction

In statistics, residual values direct the portion of the variability in a dependent variable fragment that is left after the forecasters have accounted for the variability described in the investigation.

04

Part (b) Step 2: Explanation

The table shows the values of predicted and residuals:

(X)
Metabolic rate (cal/24hrs)
(Y)

From the above table, the point (42,1418)has the largest residual. Hence, the point deviate greatly from a line, it is an outlier.

Most popular questions from this chapter

Managing diabetes People with diabetes measure their fasting plasma glucose (FPG; measured in units of milligrams per milliliter) after fasting for at least 8 hours. Another measurement, made at regular medical checkups, is called HbA. This is roughly the percent of red blood cells that have a glucose

molecule attached. It measures average exposure to glucose over a period of several months. The table below gives data on both HbA and FPG for 18 diabetics five months after they had completed a diabetes education class.

(a) Make a scatterplot with HbA as the explanatory variable. There is a positive linear relationship, but it is surprisingly weak.

(b) Subject 15 is an outlier in the y-direction. Subject 18 is an outlier in the x-direction. Find the correlation for all 18 subjects, for all except Subject 15 and

for all except Subject 18 Are either or both of these subjects influential for the correlation? Explain in simple language why r changes in opposite directions when we remove each of these points.

(c) Add three regression lines for predicting FPG from HbA to your scatterplot: for all 18 subjects, for all except Subject 15 and for all except Subject 18

Is either Subject 15 or Subject 18 strongly influential for the least-squares line? Explain in simple language what features of the scatterplot explain the degree of influence.

Do heavier people burn more energy? Metabolic rate, the rate at which the body consumes energy, is important in studies of weight gain, dieting, and exercise. We have data on the lean body mass and resting metabolic rate for 12women who are subjects in a study of dieting. Lean body mass, given in kilograms, is a person’s weight leaving out all fat. Metabolic rate is measured in calories burned per 24hours. The researchers believe that lean body mass is an important influence on metabolic rate.

(a) Make a scatterplot on your calculator to examine the researchers’ belief.

(b) Describe the direction, form, and strength of the relationship.

Bird colonies One of nature’s patterns connects the percent of adult birds in a colony that return from the previous year and the number of new adults that join the colony. Here are data for 13colonies of sparrow-hawks:4

(a) Describe the direction, form, and strength of the relationship between number of new sparrow-hawks in a colony and percent of returning adults.

(b) For short-lived birds, the association between these variables is positive: changes in weather and food supply drive the populations of new and returning birds up or down together. For long-lived territorial birds, on the other hand, the association is negative because returning birds claim their territories in the colony and don’t leave room for new recruits. Which type of species is the sparrow-hawk? Explain.

All brawn? The figure below plots the average brain weight in grams versus average body weight in kilograms for 96species of mammals. There are many small mammals whose points at the lower-left overlap.

(a) The correlation between body weight and brain weight isr=0.86. Explain what this value means.

(b) What effect would removing the elephant have on the correlation? Justify your answer.

If we leave out the low outlier, the correlation for the remaining 13 points in the figure above is closest to

(a)0.95.(b) 0.5.

(c)0. (d) 0.5 (e)0.95.
