When we look at the Sun, we see what appears to be a surface, but this is actually the photosphere. The photosphere is often described as the Sun’s 'visible surface' because it is the layer from which the majority of the Sun's light escapes and becomes visible to us on Earth. However, it is crucial to understand that this 'surface' is not like the solid ground we stand on. Instead, it is a thin layer of gas approximately 500 kilometers thick.

The temperature in the photosphere ranges from about 4,500 degrees Celsius at the outer edge to approximately 6,000 degrees Celsius closer to the inner regions. Because it emits light across a spectrum visible to the naked eye, it is where most of the sunlight we see originates. Consequently, the photosphere's visibility is just an effect of its properties as a gaseous layer, not a solid surface.

The Sun, including its photosphere, is composed predominantly of hydrogen (about 74%) and helium (about 24%), with trace amounts of other elements like oxygen, carbon, neon, and iron. This elemental make-up means the Sun is a gigantic sphere of hot, glowing gas and plasma, rather than having any solid parts.

As the Sun lacks a solid surface altogether, the photosphere itself is a layer where gases become transparent enough that photons—particles of light—are able to escape. Because it is purely gaseous, there are no clear-cut boundaries, and the concept of a surface becomes more about the appearance from a distance rather than a tangible entity.

One of the critical concepts in understanding the photosphere is optical thickness. This property refers to the density of the layer in relation to the ability of light to pass through it. In the case of the photosphere, its optical thickness is such that light we see comes from varying depths within this layer.

This means that the photons we observe have been scattered and absorbed numerous times before coming towards us. Therefore, we are not seeing light from a single, clearly defined surface; instead, it’s a mix of light emanating from different levels within this thin, gaseous shell, making it appear as though we are seeing a more solid surface.

Contrary to the abrupt boundary coming to mind when thinking about a surface, the photosphere has a gradual transition to both the layer above it (the chromosphere) and the layer below (the convective zone).

This gradual transition is due to the changing temperature and density of the gas. As you move outwards from the Sun's core, the gas becomes less dense and cooler. This allows for a smooth change between layers, further reinforcing that the photosphere is not a true surface but a region of transition.

This zoning means that the photosphere does not have a sharp edge. Instead, from the core outward, each layer of the Sun is smoothly “dissolving” into the next, making the visible 'surface' fuzzier and giving it depth rather than being an outright surface.
