A bimetallic strip consists of thin pieces of brass and steel bonded together (Fig. 17.10 ). What happens when the strip is heated?

In more scientific terms, the coefficient is simply how much a material’s dimensions are expected to change with temperature. We calculate it by measuring the change in length, area, or volume (depending on whether we're looking at one, two, or three dimensions) per unit temperature increase. This coefficient isn't just an arbitrary number; it's rooted in the very frenzy of the kinetic energy of the material's molecules.

The molecular world is an unseen dance floor where atoms and molecules move in constant, energetic motion, and temperature plays the DJ. As the temperature cranks up, it's as if the tempo of the music increases – molecules move faster, reflecting their increased kinetic energy. With more bounce in their steps, they need more room to dance.
