A real image is produced when light rays actually converge at a point after reflecting off an object. This convergence means the image can be projected onto a surface or screen and can be captured, such as in photography. Real images are formed on the same side as the object in convex lenses (or opposite in concave mirrors), and they can be viewed from any angle as long as the screen is placed at the focal point.

A virtual image, on the other hand, forms where light rays only appear to converge; they don't actually meet at a point. This occurs when light rays diverge, but an optical device, such as a concave lens or convex mirror, makes them seem as if they're coming from a common point behind the device. Virtual images cannot be projected on a screen, because the light rays never actually meet. They can't be captured in the same way real images can but can still be seen when looking into the optical device that creates them. For instance, the image you see of yourself when looking into a flat bathroom mirror is a virtual image.

Understanding how light rays behave is the foundation for comprehending image formation. Light travels in straight lines until it interacts with an object or medium that causes it to reflect, refract, or scatter. When dealing with lenses and mirrors, the key phenomena are reflection and refraction.

Reflection occurs when light bounces off a surface. The law of reflection states that the angle of incidence (the angle at which the incoming ray hits a surface) equals the angle of reflection (the angle at which it leaves). In mirrors, this principle causes light rays to bounce in a predictable manner, contributing to image formation.

Refraction is the bending of light as it passes from one medium to another of different density. Lenses utilize this to alter the direction of light rays. Converging lenses (convex) bend light rays inward, towards a focal point, while diverging lenses (concave) spread light rays outward. The specific paths that light takes through these optical devices determine whether a real or virtual image is formed.

Image projection involves the display of an image on a surface, typically using light. For a projection to occur, there must be a real image, since this type of image can be intercepted by a screen as light rays physically converge at a point. Projection technology can be as simple as a pinhole camera, which uses a tiny opening to project an image onto a surface, or as complex as a digital projector that utilizes lenses and digital processing to cast an image onto a screen.

It's vital to understand that while a real image can be directly projected onto a screen, a virtual image cannot because it doesn’t consist of light rays that converge in real space. In the context of an exercise, if a screen was placed where a virtual image is perceived to be, no image would form on the screen because there are no actual light rays arriving there. The image exists only as a perception in the viewer's mind, constructed from the diverging light rays that lenses or mirrors make appear to converge.
