Production Flow Control is an overarching term that refers to the methods used to manage the movement of goods through the manufacturing process. It ensures that each component arrives at the right place at the right time, and in the correct quantity.

In complex production settings such as a steel mill with interconnected processes, Production Flow Control becomes critical for efficiency. The flexibility to apply different systems, like PFB (Push Forward Buffering) for continuous movement between processes, and kanban for inventory management between them, exemplifies the adaptability of production flow control mechanisms. Effective flow control reduces idle time, streamlines manufacturing, and improves overall productivity.

Inventory Management is the process of ordering, storing, using, and selling a company's inventory. It includes management of raw materials, components, and finished products, as well as warehousing and processing such items.

For businesses facing sporadic usage patterns, as described in the exercise scenario, inventory management becomes a balancing act to avoid overstocking and understocking. Systems like CONWIP and kanban can be blended to manage inventory efficiently across different routings.
