Two sinusoidal waves with identical wavelengths and amplitudes travel in opposite directions along a string with a speed of10cm/s. If the time interval between instants when the string is flat is0.50s, what is the wavelength of the waves?

Short Answer

Expert verified

The wavelength of the waves is 10 m

Step by step solution

01

The given data

i) Velocity of the string, v=10 m/s

ii) Time interval, t =0.50 sec

02

Understanding the concept of wave motion

The string is flat each time the particle passes through the equilibrium position. The particle may travel towards the positive end or negative end and come back to its equilibrium position. So the time taken during this travel would be half of the period of the wave. Using this we can find the period or frequency of the wave and from that, we can find the wavelength.

Formula:

The frequency of a wave,f=1t (i)

The wavelength of wave, λ=vf (ii)

03

Calculation of the wavelength

In the given problem, the total time interval i.e. travelling of particle in positive and negative interval can be given as 2 (0.50s) = 1.0s

Hence, using equation (i) and the total interval, the value of frequency becomes:

f=11.0=1Hz

Again using the value of frequency in equation (ii), we get the wavelength as follows:
λ=10m/s1Hz=10m

Hence, the value of the wavelength is 10m

The speed of a transverse wave on a string is170m/swhen the string tension is 120N. To what value must the tension be changed to raise the wave speed to180m/s?

Two sinusoidal waves with the same amplitude of 9.00 mmand the same wavelength travel together along a string that is stretched along anaxis. Their resultant wave is shown twice in Figure, as valleyAtravels in the negative direction of the xaxis by distance d=56.0 cmin 8.0 ms. The tick marks along the axis are separated by 10cm, and heightHis 8.0 mm. Let the equation for one wave be of the fory(x,t)=ymsin(kx±ωt+φ1), whereφ1=0and you must choose the correct sign in front ofω. For the equation for the other wave, what are (a)What isym, (b)What isk, (c)What isω, (d)What isφ2, and (e)What is the sign in front ofω?

In Fig. 16-50, a circular loop of string is set spinning about the center point in a place with negligible gravity. The radius is 4.00 cmand the tangential speed of a string segment is 5.00cm/s. The string is plucked. At what speed do transverse waves move along the string? (Hint:Apply Newton’s second law to a small, but finite, section of the string.)

Figure 16-28 shows phasor diagrams for three situations in which two waves travel along the same string. All six waves have the same amplitude. Rank the situations according to the amplitude of the net wave on the string, greatest first.
