Question: Two spectators at a soccer game see, and a moment later hear, the ball being kicked on the playing field. The time delay for spectator Ais, 0.23 s and the spectator Bit is 0.12s. Sight lines from the spectators to the player kicking the ball meet at an angle of. How far are (a) spectatorand (b) spectatorfrom the player? (c) How far are the spectators from each other?

Short Answer

Answer

  1. Spectator A is 79 m far from the player.
  2. Spectator B is 41 m far from the player.

3. The spectators are 89 far from each other.

Step by step solution

01

Given data

  1. The time delay for spectator A isΔtA=0.23s.
  2. The time delay for spectator B isΔtB=0.12s.
  3. The slight line from the two spectators to the player kicking the ball meet at an angle of 900 .
02

Determining the concept

The time for sound to travel from the kicker to a spectator is given by,

tsound=dv

The time required for light to travel the same distance dis given by,

tlight=dc

Here, c is the speed of light, d is the distance and v is speed of sound.

03

(a) Determine how far is spectator A

The delay between seeing and hearing the kick is,

Δt=tsound-tlightΔt=dv-dc

But, v<<c, so delay can be approximated by,

Δt=dvd=vΔt

Thus, the distance from the kicker to spectator A is,

dA=vΔtA

Substitute 343 m/s for v and 0.23 s for tainto the above equation

dA=343×0.23=79m

Hence, spectator A is 79m far from the player.

04

(b) Determine how far is spectator B

Similarly, the distance from the kicker to spectator is,

dB=vΔtB

Substitute 343 m/s for v and 0. 12s for tbinto the above equation

dB=343×0.12=41m

Hence, spectator B is 41m far from the player.

05

(c) Determining the distance of spectators from each other

The line from the kicker to each spectator and from one spectator to the other, form a right angle with the line joining the spectators as the hypotenuse. So, the distance between the spectators is,

D=dA2+dB2

Substitute 79 m for dA and 41 for db into the above equation,

D=792+412=89m

Hence, the spectators are far from each other.

Male Rana catesbeiana bullfrogs are known for their loud mating call. The call is emitted not by the frog’s mouth but by its eardrums, which lie on the surface of the head. And, surprisingly, the sound has nothing to do with the frog’s inflated throat. If the emitted sound has a frequency of 260Hzand a sound level of85dB(near the eardrum), what is the amplitude of the eardrum’s oscillation? The air density is1.21kg/m3.

Question: A handclap on stage in an amphitheater sends out sound waves that scatters from terraces of width W 0.75 mfigure. The sound returns to the stage as a periodic series of pulses, one from each terrace; the parade of pulses sounds like a played note (a)Assuming that all the rays in figure are horizontal , find the frequency at which the pulses return(that is ,the frequency of the perceived note .(b)If the widthof the terraces were smaller would the frequency be higher or lower?

The crest of a Parasaurolophus dinosaur skull contains a nasal passage in the shape of a long, bent tube open at both ends. The dinosaur may have used the passage to produce sound by setting up the fundamental mode in it.

(a) If the nasal passage in a certain Parasaurolophus fossil is2.0mlong, what frequency would have been produced?

(b) If that dinosaur could be recreated (as in Jurassic Park), would a person with a hearing range of60Hz to 20kHzbe able to hear that fundamental mode and, if so, would the sound be high or low frequency? Fossil skulls that contain shorter nasal passages are thought to be those of the female Parasaurolophus.

(c) Would that make the female’s fundamental frequency higher or lower than the male’s?

A detector initially moves at constant velocity directly toward a stationary sound source and then (after passing it) directly from it. The emitted frequency is f. During the approach the detected frequency isfapp' and during the recession it isfrec' . If the frequencies are related by (fapp'frec')/f=0.500, what is the ratio vD/vof the speed of the detector to the speed of sound?
