A particular solid is electrically charged after it is rubbed, but it is not known whether its charge is positive or negative. How could you determine which charge it has by using a piece of plastic and fur?

When certain materials come into contact and are then separated, an interesting phenomenon known as static electricity occurs. It's essentially the buildup of electrical charge on the surface of objects. The term 'static' refers to the fact that this charge generally remains stationary until it is discharged, often through a spark or by conducting to another object.

One of the most common ways to generate static electricity is by rubbing two different materials together, like plastic and fur. During this process, electrons, which are the negatively charged particles around atoms, can get transferred from one material to the other. This transfer occurs due to the differences in what's called the 'triboelectric series', a list that ranks materials based on their tendency to gain or lose electrons.

For instance, in the exercise example, rubbing plastic with fur usually results in the plastic becoming negatively charged, which means electrons have been added to the plastic. Fur, on the other hand, loses some of its electrons and becomes positively charged. This separation of charge creates static electricity.

Knowing the type of charge on an object can be useful in various scientific and technological applications. Determining electric charge is a process that involves identifying whether an object is positively charged, negatively charged, or neutral.

The classic school experiment using a balloon rubbed against hair, or plastic rubbed with fur, demonstrates this concept effectively. After such an interaction, the materials can be brought close to other objects to check for electrical attraction or repulsion—attraction occurs between objects with opposite charges, and repulsion happens between objects with the same charge.

Following the exercise improvement advice, if we rub plastic with fur and then bring the plastic near a solid that we know nothing about, we would watch the behavior of the solid. If the solid is attracted to the plastic, it is indicated that it has a positive charge (opposite to the negative charge of the plastic). Conversely, if there's a repulsion, the solid must also be negatively charged. A neutral solid would show no particular attraction or repulsion to the charged objects.

Electrostatic interactions refer to the forces that charged objects exert on one another. These forces are essential components of the fundamental laws governing electricity and magnetism, described by Coulomb's law. Coulomb's law states that the force between two point charges is directly proportional to the product of the magnitudes of the charges and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.

There are two types of electrostatic interactions: attraction and repulsion. Charged objects with opposite signs attract each other, while those with the same sign repel each other. This principle is instrumental in determining the charge on an unknown object, as seen in our exercise.

The interaction between the charged fur and the solid, or the plastic and the solid, utilizes electrostatic forces to reveal information about the charge state of the solid. If the solid is drawn towards the fur, it confirms the existence of a negative charge on the solid due to the attraction by the positively charged fur. Alternatively, if the solid is repelled by the negatively charged plastic, it signifies that the solid also carries a negative charge. Understanding electrostatic interactions allows us to make these charge determinations.
