Objects absorb infrared radiation and convert it into heat, which is why heat lamps, which emit infrared radiation, are adept at keeping food warm. This radiation does not cause sunburn or tanning as it does not have the necessary energy to trigger changes in the melanin of the skin. The importance of infrared radiation extends beyond heat lamps; it is also used in various technologies such as remote controls, thermal imaging, and even in physical therapy for its warmth.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation falls in the part of the spectrum with wavelengths ranging from 10 nm to 400 nm, shorter than visible light and infrared radiation. Unlike infrared radiation, UV has enough energy to affect the cells in our skin. Tanning lamps utilize UV radiation to stimulate melanin production in the skin, which leads to the tanned appearance. This same radiation can also cause sunburn and has been linked to skin damage and increased risks of skin cancer. The intensity and effects of UV radiation from tanning lamps can be controlled in a way that is not possible with natural sunlight, but caution is still advised due to the potential for skin damage.

Melanin is the pigment responsible for giving color to our skin, eyes, and hair. The production of melanin in the skin is the body's natural defense against the harmful effects of UV radiation. When skin is exposed to UV radiation from the sun or a tanning lamp, it triggers the production of melanin, which absorbs and dissipates the energy to protect skin cells from damage. This process is what causes the skin to darken and is what people commonly refer to as a tan. Melanin production varies among individuals based on genetics and levels of exposure to UV radiation, explaining why some people tan easily while others may burn.
