If sunlight can be conceived of as a beam of photons, each of which carries a certain amount of energy and momentum, why don't we experience (or feel) any recoil as these particles collide with our bodies when, say, we're at the beach on a sunny day?

When discussing the nature of light, it's fascinating to consider that light behaves both as a wave and as a series of particles known as photons. Each photon carries a distinct packet of energy, which can be expressed by the equation

This energy transfer is crucial for various phenomena, from photosynthesis to the very concept of radiation pressure. But photons also carry momentum despite having no rest mass. with \(c\) representing the speed of light and \(\lambda\) the wavelength. Our encounter with light is typically gentle. We bathe in it without ever experiencing the phantom push it imparts. This is largely due to the mild nature of radiation pressure, the pressure exerted by light or photons when they strike a surface. While photons transfer momentum to the surface, the resultant force spread over an area is defined by the radiation pressure formula

This value seems negligible, but it's crucial in scenarios like the propulsion of solar sails in space where radiation pressure can be harnessed to propel spacecraft using large, reflective surfaces.

Light’s interactions with matter can be likened to a ballet of energy exchange. When photons, the elemental particles of light, collide with objects, their fates can diverge along three distinct paths: absorption, reflection, or transmission.

When absorbed, photons give up their energy to the object, often manifesting as a subtle increase in temperature. On reflection, they bounce off the surface, transferring momentum in the process and causing radiation pressure, albeit diminished due to its spread over a vast area. In transmission, photons pass through without altering their presence or trajectory significantly.

Each interaction allows for the momentum and energy of photons to be conveyed to the object, which is particularly perceptible in precision instruments. However, in day-to-day life, like feeling the warmth of the sun on our skin, these interactions are so subtle that we do not detect them as tactile sensations. Our sensory apparatus is not fine-tuned to distinguish this discrete dance of energy, but sensitive equipment can measure and exploit these phenomena in scientific and technological applications.
