One way to desalinate seawater-remove the dissolved salts so that the water is drinkable- is to distill it: boil the seawater and condense the steam. The salts stay behind. This technique has one major disadvantage. It consumes a large amount of energy. Why is that?

This is a substantial energy barrier and is the main reason why the distillation process is energy-intensive. When considering the vast quantities of seawater being distilled, it becomes clear why so much energy is needed for desalination. The latent heat of condensation is similarly significant, as it represents the energy that must be removed to convert steam back into liquid water.

The environmental impact of desalination, particularly through distillation, is a pressing concern. The primary environmental issue associated with desalination is the high energy consumption, which often relies on non-renewable energy sources such as fossil fuels. Combustion of these fuels for energy contributes to the emission of greenhouse gases, which are implicated in climate change.

Additionally, the desalination process itself can have direct effects on marine ecosystems. To reduce energy consumption, modern methods like reverse osmosis have been developed; however, the distillation method remains energy-intensive. The integration of renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power, and the advancement of energy recovery technologies are critical paths towards creating a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective water purification process.
